Initially people used Mainframe systems to store data. This technique of storage using mainframes was gradually replaced by rackservers enabled by Microsoft etc. These servers were scaled over time, depending on the need to enhance the storage capacity. Around early 2010, virtualization came into existence. Helping reduce the space constraint and lessening the costs. The utilization of the storage space here happened very slowly. Gradually the cloud concept was in, leading to more virtualization. Overtime, to overcome saturation of storage space people had to go to vendors to provide hosting services. The management tools of these vendors were utilized to enable satiate the growing storage needs. 

 

All this has helped increase the capacity of storage but the I/O performance has reduced. Traditional form of IT which was product centric and silo-ed packets of automation, has been replaced with the modern IT systems where apps and innovation is the norm. Time and value is paramount. When the amount of money spent is considered in the traditional systems 64% of the revenue was wasted whereas in the new system only 36% of the money is being spent. Software defined convergence is the new way in IT.
